A beignet is somewhat synonymous with New Orleans. It’s like a fritter, and it’s actually the official state doughnut of Louisiana, which might imply that they’re sold on every street corner, the Down South equivalent to Starbucks in New York City. But beignets hard to find; Starbucks is still easier.
“You can get a beignet at two places,” a local told me, when I was hunting for one in the Marigny neighborhood. “At Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter, or at a place out by the City Park, but they’re not worth eating, so there’s really only one place to get them.”
Sounds like a business opportunity to me, because beignets are tasty and Cafe Du Monde is always crowded. But they’re a little tricky to eat. So be careful, and follow these directions:
1. Pick up beignet and pour extra white sugar on top.
2. Lick lips and open mouth wide.
5. Bite down. Don’t choke! Eating beignets can be both safe and fun!
